Eurovision 70 Bulgaria Bangaranga will be remembered less for sequins than for subtraction and a historic first win.
VIENNA – The 70th Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Vienna following JJ’s victory for Austria with “Wasted Love” in Basel. 35 countries are set to take part. The contest will be hosted in the Wiener Stadthalle, the same venue used in 2015, which can accommodate up to 16,000 spectators. The 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Vienna on May 12, 14, and 16, 2026.The 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in May 2026 at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria. Hosted by Victoria Swarovski and Michael Ostrowski, the prestigious music event featured competing acts from 35 different countries. Bulgaria made history by securing its first-ever Eurovision victory, with pop artist Dara winning the grand final.
Eurovision 70 Bulgaria Bangaranga: Why Only 35 Countries
This year Vienna hosts edition 70. Wiener Stadthalle Halle D 16,000-capacity arena that also held the 2015 contest after Conchita Wurst’s win. 35 countries on stage, the smallest line-up since 2003. The competition marking the lowest number of participants in two decades.
Why the drop? 35 entries will be participating this year, after 5 countries have withdrawn after the confirmation of Israel being allowed to participate by the EBU. The countries that have withdrawn are Spain, The Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia and Iceland. This is the largest number of boycotting countries in the contest’s history alongside the 1970 contest.
Despite reaching its 70th anniversary, the European contest is taking place in a climate of tension and protests never seen before. Israel’s presence in the competition has led to the largest boycott in Eurovision history, with the withdrawal of five countries. The EBU called it an artistic decision by members; critics called it the largest boycott since 1970.
Austria staged for the third time, following JJ’s 2025 win. Presenters Victoria Swarovski and Michael Ostrowski kept the show tight, while voting stayed classic: two sets of points per country plus aggregated Rest of World vote.
Eurovision 70 Bulgaria Bangaranga: How Dara Won
The novelty was Bulgaria. Returning after a three-year absence, Sofia sent pop star Dara with “Bangaranga”. Co-written with Anne Judith Wik, Cristian Tarcea and Dimitris Kontopoulos, the track blended Balkan brass with hyperpop and won both juries and public – the first double since Portugal’s Salvador Sobral in 2017. It is Bulgaria’s first Eurovision victory ever.
Dara, 27, is already a star in Bulgaria with 4x platinum hits and a coaching role on The Voice Bulgaria. “Bangaranga” was built for Wiener Stadthalle: 122 BPM, a brass drop sampled from Kusturica-style fanfare, and a chorus that flips from Bulgarian to English — “bangaranga, baby, tancuvai s men”. Eurovision 70 Bulgaria Bangaranga was the only song this year to get 12 points from both juries and televote in semi-final 2.
Backstage, Dara said: “We came after three years away. We had nothing to lose. So we brought noise.”
Final Ranking and What Happens for Sofia 2027
Final ranking told a new map: 1 Bulgaria, 2 Israel with Noam Bettan’s “Michelle”, 3 Romania, 4 Australia’s Delta Goodrem with “Eclipse”, 5 Italy’s Sal Da Vinci. Romania matched its 2005 and 2010 peaks but with record points. Luxembourg failed to qualify for the first time, leaving Ukraine as the sole ever-present finalist since semis began in 2004.
Gossip turned political. Backstage, delegations traded barbs over flag rules, while fans noted the irony: Israel finished second in a year defined by protests against its presence. On X, commentators praised Dara’s vocal control and questioned whether a reduced contest is still representative.
The outcome matters beyond music. A Bulgarian win points the 2027 contest toward Sofia, a first-time host with tight budgets and big ambitions. BNT has already scouted Arena Sofia with 12,500 seats and a 20 million euro budget. For the EBU, Vienna 2026 proved the show can survive a boycott, but not without scars.
Curiosities you won’t see on the broadcast:
- No tickets ever. Wiener Stadthalle holds 16,152 seats, previously hosted twice 1967 and 2015.
- Austria, reigning champion, is hosting at the Wiener Stadthalle and this will be the third time Vienna has hosted, returning 11 years after its last hosting in 2015.
- Tonight, the Grand Final will take place live from Wiener Stadthalle. 25 nations will compete on stage, all hoping to take home the iconic Eurovision trophy designed by Kjell Engman.
From 1956 in Lugano to 2026 in Vienna, Eurovision 70 Bulgaria Bangaranga proves the contest’s oldest trick: a small country with a big brass hook can still win everything when everyone else argues about politics.
